Combined electrocoagulation processes

01.Oct.2019

The integration of electrocoagulation, EC with one or more treatment processes has become a
novel approach that able to improve the removal of colloidal and nonbiodegradable pollutants.
Several treatment processes including adsorption, chemical coagulation, magnetic field, reverse
osmoses and membrane filtration have been combined with electrocoagulation treatment step.
The resulting combined systems have shown an improved treatment performance. Accordingly. This review analyzed the main results of all published studies on adsorption, chemical
coagulation, magnetic field, reverse osmoses and membrane filtration-assisted electrocoagulation processes. It was found that most of the available studies have been conducted in a bench-scale
experiments using simple synthetic wastewater. The main features of these combined systems such as process mechanisms, kinetic models, scale up and cost estimation are discussed and
analyzed. Finally, several concluding remarks were presented in order to show the gaps and suggest insights for future studies.
